Winds of Change har mere:
The 6th Division Assumes Authority: The baby steps continue in the process to build Iraq's new army. This is the sort of thing that gets totally overlooked while the hand-wringers go on and on about how the Iraqi military will never manage to get control of their own country.
Yes, the number of Iraqi battalions capable of independent operations is apparently down to one from three. But no one seems to want to really talk about what the difference between Level 2 (mostly independent) and Level 1 (fully independent) is. At both Level 2 and Level 1 readiness, for instance, the Iraqi forces plan and conduct their own operations. The difference isn't who does the fighting, the difference is who provides logistics, artillery fire support, medical evac, and other non-direct combat support services. ...
During the time the number of Level 1 battalions went from three to one, the number of Level 2 battalions went from about 18 to 36.
Additionally, combined U.S.-Iraqi operations and independent Iraqi actions at the company level or above have jumped from about 100 in May to more than 1,300 now, Casey said. Such operations account for 80 percent of the total, he added.
